BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The Downtown Decoration Committee has released the guidelines for its 2026 Pumpkin Scarecrow Contest, which invites individuals, businesses and groups to decorate downtown lampposts this fall.

Scarecrows are to be up October 5-31 and should be fully removed from the lamppost by November 2. Materials should be placed in trash cans and not left on the sidewalk.

Entrants are responsible for all materials used in their decoration and must secure the scarecrow properly so it does not damage the lampposts. Scarecrows may not be attached to banner holders. Either a plastic or a real pumpkin may be used for the pumpkin face.

Designs should be tasteful and family-friendly, according to the guidelines. Once a scarecrow is fully installed, participants are asked to take a photo and return to their form entry to upload a picture of the finished pumpkin scarecrow.

The committee first pitched the lamppost scarecrow contest in 2025.
