Deadly surge continues as West Virginia announces eight new COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that eight more West Virginians have died of COVID-19, taking the total number of deaths to 187.

Fatalities in West Virginia attributed to the virus have surged in August — 71 West Virginians have died of COVID-19 just this month, according to the DHHR.

The eight deaths reported Tuesday include a 65-year old male from Logan County, a 72-year old female from Logan County, a 72-year old female from Logan County, an 86-year old female from Taylor County, a 73-year old female from Wyoming County, a 92-year old female from Grant County, a 64-year old female from Kanawha County, and a 51-year old female from Cabell County.

The DHHR also announced Tuesday that 83 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10 a.m. on August 25, 2020, there have been 403,394 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 9,395 total cases and 187 deaths,” according to a press release.

New cases were reported Tuesday in Berkeley, Boone, Cabell, Fayette, Grant, Hardy, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Marion, Mason, Mingo, Monroe, Nicholas, Ohio, Preston, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Wayne and Wood counties.

About 1,722 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 7,486 people have recovered and 187 have died. The daily percent positive was 1.72%
