Davis & Elkins College and Vandalia Health Davis Health System establish Mark Doak Award

Davis & Elkins College and Vandalia Health Davis Medical Center have launched the Mark Doak Award, a $10,000 renewable scholarship honoring a dedicated leader and supporting employees and their families in pursuing higher education.

Davis & Elkins College has partnered with Vandalia Health Davis Medical Center to provide a scholarship for current employees and families to attend D&E. The Mark Doak Award, named in honor of the former CEO for Davis Health System in Elkins, West Virginia, features a $2,500 award each year for four years, totaling $10,000.

To be considered for the Mark Doak Award, recipient(s) must be a current employee of Davis Medical Center in Elkins, W.Va., or a dependent or a dependent family member of the following Vandalia Health facilities: Monongalia, Broaddus, Webster, Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC). Recipient(s) who are accepted for admission to D&E are required to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the scheduled deadline.

“We are deeply grateful to Vandalia Health for their generosity in establishing the Davis Medical Center Academic Scholarship-Mark Doak Award,” says Vice President for Institutional Advancement Scott Goddard. This annual scholarship reflects the enduring partnership between Davis & Elkins College and Davis Medical Center, honoring the legacy of Senator Henry Gassaway Davis, a founder of both institutions. The scholarship, valued at $10,000 over four years, offers a meaningful opportunity for employees and their families to pursue higher education at D&E. It underscores our shared commitment to enriching the lives of our community and supporting the future of healthcare professionals.”

“Vandalia Health appreciates the service that Mark Doak provided during the transition period of our merger with Davis Health System and bringing them into our organization,” says David Goldberg, president and CEO, Mon Health System, executive vice president, Vandalia Health. “We see the great education D&E provides students and are honored to provide support to our colleagues and provide their dependents affordability to a great West Virginia college.”

Candidates for the Mark Doak Award will be reviewed by a committee consisting of a representative from the Vandalia Health Human Resources Department, a representative from Davis & Elkins College’s Financial Aid Office, and a representative of D&E’s Office of Enrollment Management. The scholarship will provide a $2,500 per year award and is renewable for up to four years if the recipient(s) remain in good academic standing.

“D&E is grateful to Vandalia Health Davis Health System for this scholarship in recognition of Mark Doak,” says President Chris A. Wood. “The establishment of a Doak Scholar at D&E reinforces the historical tie between the hospital and the College and honors a gentleman who has played a very important role for the hospital and the greater Elkins community. Mark has worked tirelessly and selflessly for decades to improve the quality of life for the residents of Randolph County and beyond. Mark’s life of service is a model for the Doak Scholar and us all. Davis & Elkins College is honored by this gift.”
