COVID-19 hospitalizations in West Virginia surge as November draws to a close

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 845 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (6), Barbour (17), Lewis (1) and Randolph (4) counties.

A record high 139 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR. Monday’s update:

  • Removed one confirmed case from Nov. 25
  • Added one probable case to Nov. 27
  • Removed nine probable cases and added two confirmed cases to Nov. 28
  • Added nine probable cases and four confirmed cases to Nov. 29

During the month of November, hospitalizations have more the doubled in West Virginia, rising from 240 on Oct. 31 to 597 on Monday. At least 278 West Virginians died from COVID-19 in November, according to the DHHR.

Six additional deaths were attributed to the disease on Monday, according to the DHHR – a 79-year old male from Monroe County, a 93-year old female from Brooke County, an 87-year old female from Brooke County, an 89-year old female from Ritchie County, an 80-year old female from Kanawha County, and an 84-year old male from Cabell County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10 a.m., November 30, 2020, there have been 1,130,956 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 47,842 total cases and 735 deaths,” according to a press release.

About 16,787 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 30,320 people have recovered and 735 have died. The daily percent positive was 7.07%.
