Coretha Jean Smith

Coretha Jean Smith, age 85, of Sauls Run Road, Buckhannon, died Monday, May 1, 2023, at her home. 

She was born on July 16, 1937, in Walkersville, WV, a daughter of the late Charles Lee and Mary Mildred Hull Rogers.  On April 19, 1957, she was united in marriage to Hollen Gene Smith, who preceded her in death on August 24, 1995.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two sons:  Donald Smith and David Gene “Grubby” Smith; and one brother Robert Rogers. 

She is survived by one daughter:  Darla and husband Delmar Tenney of Buckhannon; four grandchildren:  Chris Smith, Jessica Smith, Jackie Cutlip and companion Mark Hinzman, and Brittany Smith; six great grandchildren:  Dylan and Drew Hinzman, Ridge Smith, Gavin Shaver, Serenidi Smith, and Brendan Smith; two sisters:  Elizabeth and husband Worthy Hall of Lost Creek and Mary and husband Jerry Hannon of Buckhannon; one brother Charles “Junior” Rogers and wife Brenda of Weston; and several nieces and nephews. 

Jean attended the Full Gospel Church in Buckhannon.  She loved travelling and playing cards, especially hosting her Thursday card group. She supported the Wendling’s Warriors Relay for Life team and was an enthusiastic fan of her twin great grandsons’ ball teams.

The family extends their sincere appreciation to caregiver Mae Carpenter and WV Hospice. 

The family will receive friends at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel on Thursday, May 4, 2023, from 4-7:00 PM.  The funeral will be held at the funeral chapel on Friday, May 5, 2023, at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Chad Lewis officiating.  Interment will follow in the Heavner Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wendling’s Warriors Relay for Life team, PO Box 661, Buckhannon, WV 26201.
