The Upshur Parish House is inviting the community to tee off in honor of a beloved local leader at the first-ever Rev. Barry Moll Memorial Golf Scramble, set for Monday, July 28, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Bel Meadow Golf Course.
The event is more than just a round of golf. It’s a celebration of the life and legacy of the late Rev. Barry Moll, a longtime supporter and volunteer of the Parish House whose commitment to service left a lasting impact on Upshur County.
“This is our first time hosting any event like this, and we’re really excited,” said Isaac Casto, Executive Director of the Upshur Parish House. “Once we attached Barry’s name to it, it wasn’t just about raising money. It became about doing things the right way to honor someone who meant so much to us.”
Moll, a West Virginia Wesleyan College graduate and retired United Methodist minister, served as chaplain at St. Joseph’s Hospital and was an active member of the Parish House executive committee. Alongside his wife, Pam, he played a behind-the-scenes role in many Parish House efforts, including organizing holiday meals, running the backpack program, and helping with fundraisers like the Strawberry Pancake Breakfast.
Moll passed away on March 26, 2024, at age 69.
“Losing Barry was hard, personally and organizationally,” said Casto. “He was just a joy. A big baseball fan, always full of energy. This scramble is a way to keep his spirit alive and share it with the wider community.”
With a full field of 18 registered teams, the tournament promises a day of fun, friendly competition, and connection. While the scramble is geared toward golfers, Casto emphasized that the community is welcome to participate in another way. A freewill donation potluck-style picnic will begin around 5 p.m. and is open to everyone. JAWS BBQ will provide a portion of the meal.
“The picnic might be the most exciting part,” Casto said. “It offers a chance for people who aren’t golfers to still come out, enjoy some good food, and spend time with the Moll family and the Parish House community.”
Pam Moll and the Moll family remain closely involved in the planning, and Casto said their continued support means a lot.“Barry would’ve loved this,” he said. “A good cause, good food, and a good time with people who cared about him and the work he did.”
Although the event has received generous support from local organizations that had connections to Barry, including West Virginia Wesleyan College, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and the United Methodist Foundation, Casto said the heart of the day is in remembering Barry and celebrating the values he embodied.
“We didn’t go into this with any fundraising goal,” said Casto. “For us, it’s about celebrating a life well lived and bringing people together in that spirit.”
