Carl Junior “Butch” Starr

Carl Junior “Butch” Starr, 81, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at the J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. 

He was born on January 9, 1940, at Horner, W.Va., a son of the late Carl Eugene Starr and Eulah Lee Adams Starr Shoulders. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Donna Wiig Starr on December 9, 2018; two sisters: Lovie Eve Starr and Virginia Lee Shoulders; and three brothers:  Louis “Mike” Starr, Russell E. Starr, and Eugene Shoulders. 

He is survived by two daughters: Christina and husband Alex Stephens of Buckhannon and Patricia Starr Flack of Calif.; two sons: Carl Eugene Starr and wife Michelle of Oceanside, Calif. and Michael Starr and wife Denise of Michigan; two grandchildren: Abigail and Jake Starr; and two sisters:  Phyllis Dittrich of Pasadena, Md. and Constance Hope “Susie” Garron of Mt. Holly, N.J.

Mr. Starr was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany in 1963 with special forces as a communications technician. He later was employed by NASA, where he assisted with communications during the Saturn V moon launch. His career in telecommunications extended the longest period with AT&T, where he retired as a regional manager. He had been an avid hunter and fisherman and was an expert marksman.

The family will receive friends at the Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, from 11 a.m. to noon, with the funeral beginning at noon. Interment will follow in the Horner Cemetery, where the Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
