Bucs, Lady Bucs begin competition at state meet; Blandino and Thropp shine in 400-meter dash

CHARLESTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers and Lady Bucs competed on day one of the 2022 West Virginia Track and Field Championships at Laidley Field in Charleston on Thursday.

On the boy’s side, there were five finals events that were held.

The Bucs shined in the 400-meter dash as Shawn Blandino finished second and Sterlin Thropp took third. Blandino had a time of 49.54 while Thropp clocked a time of 49.69. Jefferson’s Isaiah Fritts won the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.33.

The 14 points accumulated by Blandino and Thropp put the Bucs in fourth place after day one.

Following the five events, University is first with 40 points while Morgantown is second with 18 points while Jefferson is third with 15.

Other B-U results on day one in finals action were Savion Farmer placing eighth in the long jump (19-04.75), Landen Zirkle placing ninth in the pole vault (11-00) and Carter Zuliani taking ninth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.29). In the prelims for the 200-meter dash, B-U’s Taiwo Thropp ran sixth with a time of 22.59.

On the girl’s side, the Lady Bucs failed to score in four events. B-U’s Samantha Shreve finished ninth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:00.10 and Catherine Oliveto took 11th in the 400-meter dash with a clocking of 1:01.41. In a preliminary race, Chloe Cale finished 13th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.48.

Morgantown holds the day one lead on the girls’ side with 20 points while Jefferson is in second with 18.

Both teams will be back in action Friday.
