The City of Buckhannon is reminding residents of its procedures for yard waste and loose leaf collection, including several schedule changes in 2026 because of local events and holidays.

Yard waste collection runs from December 1 through August 31 on the first and third Friday of each month. In 2026, several Friday pickups have been rescheduled:

  • The Friday, June 19, pickup has been moved to Friday, June 26, because of the West Virginia Day holiday.
  • The Friday, July 3, pickup has been moved to Friday, July 10, because of the Independence Day holiday.
  • The Friday, August 7, pickup has been moved to Friday, August 14, because of the West Virginia’s Largest Yard Sale.

Accepted yard waste materials include grass, leaves, hedge trimmings and sticks.

Grass, leaves and trimmings must be placed in biodegradable bags or lidded containers weighing less than 35 pounds. Sticks must be less than 1 inch in diameter and less than 4 feet long, and they must be tied in bundles weighing less than 35 pounds.

Larger branches or shrubbery may be collected for a fee of $25 per small dump truck load.

Pickup requests must be made before noon Thursday for Friday collection. Residents may call Buckhannon City Hall at 304-472-1651 to request pickup or to be placed on the biweekly pickup list, which is renewed each March.

From September 1 through November 30, yard waste pickup occurs every Friday. The same material, bagging, bundling, fee and request rules apply, and residents must call City Hall before noon Thursday to schedule service.

Loose leaf collection runs from October 1 through the end of November and occurs every Friday by request.

Residents must call City Hall before noon Thursday for Friday loose leaf pickup. Leaves and grass must be raked into a windrow at the curb, and leaves must be loose, not bagged or placed in containers.

Parked vehicles must not block access to leaf piles. The city’s leaf vacuum can reach up to 6 feet from the street.

For more information, residents may contact Buckhannon City Hall at 304-472-1651.
