BUCKHANNON – Buckhannon City Council and the Upshur County Commission have officially set the date and time for trick-or-treating this October.
Buckhannon City Council set trick-or-treating to run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Halloween in city limits.
“We wanted to get the news out early this year and let everyone know trick-or-treating will be Oct. 31, which is a Saturday this year,” Buckhannon Mayor Robbie Skinner said during council’s Aug. 21 meeting. “That will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., which usually lines up just fine with the Upshur County schedule.”
During the Aug. 27 Upshur County Commission meeting, the commissioners voted to have trick-or-treating coincide with the city’s schedule: 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Halloween night.
Amanda Hayes, a member of the Buckhannon Downtown Decorating Committee, also attended the Aug. 27 Consolidated Public Works Board meeting to announce they will again be holding the scarecrow contest that began last year.
“Last year, the contest morphed into something bigger than what we expected. We had about 35 participants, and we originally planned to have one on every light pole on Main Street, but it started going down towards the hospital,” Hayes said. “It exceeded our expectations, so the guidelines I submitted are essentially the same as last year.”
The only difference in the guidelines is a new rule: do not attach scarecrows to banner holders or damage the lampposts when hanging the scarecrows.
Guidelines for the Buckhannon Scarecrow Contest:
- The organization, business or individuals are responsible for all materials used in decoration.
- You must secure the scarecrow properly to avoid damaging lampposts. Do not attach the scarecrow to banner holders.
- A plastic or real pumpkin may be used for the pumpkin face.
- Scarecrows must be up Oct. 5 to 31 and fully removed from the lamppost by Nov. 2. Please dispose of materials in trash cans and do not leave them on the sidewalk.
- Once fully installed, snap a photo and go back to the form entry to upload a pic of your finished pumpkin scarecrow.
- Designs should be tasteful and family-friendly.
- Individuals, businesses or groups are welcome to participate.
