Breaking: Large fire engulfs building on Main Street in Buckhannon

BUCKHANNON — No serious injuries were reported in the aftermath of a massive blaze that destroyed a building on Main Street in Buckhannon Tuesday afternoon.

The initial call came in at about 2 p.m. of a fire near Sweet-A-Licious on Main Street. Large plumes of black smoke could be seen from throughout town as the blaze quickly spread throughout the building, engulfing the upper floors.

Firefighters initially attempted to attack the fire inside the building, but as conditions deteriorated, all crews were ordered to evacuate the building. Three ladder trucks and dozens of firefighters from multiple counties surrounded the structure, dumping more than a million gallons of water on the fire.

Hours later, the fire was extinguished, the building’s interior devastated. Fire damage was contained to the single building, 23-23B East Main Street, located at the corner of Main and Spring streets, although nearby structures suffered significant water and smoke damage. The building contained four businesses — Sweet-a-Licious, September Sun Hair Studio, Bacteria Busters and Foster’s Marketing Group — as well as apartments on the second floor. Infiniti’s Downtown Tattoo is located next door.

Anyone impacted by the fire is asked to contact Mountain CAP at 304-472-1500 or the Upshur County Parish House at 304-472-0743 for assistance.

Firefighters remained on scene late into the evening Tuesday. More details will be available on My Buckhannon Wednesday.
