Basketball Bucs get third seed in sectional tournament; will face Bridgeport on Wednesday

TENNERTON – The pairing and dates for the Region I basketball tournament were set with the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers getting the third seed in the sectional two bracket.

The Bucs, despite having the second-best overall record, finished third in the sectional standings and were voted third in seeding for the tournament.

The Bucs finished 13th the in latest AP Poll with a 15-6 record but went just 1-2 against sectional foes beating Preston but dropping games to University and Bridgeport.

University earned the top seed while Bridgeport was the second seed and Preston was the fourth seed.

University went 3-0 on the court against their sectional competition but had to forfeit their game with Bridgeport and three games overall. The forfeitures left University with a 9-13 record overall.

University will face Preston (7-15) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Bucs and Bridgeport (17-5) will square off Wednesday at that same time.

Buckhannon-Upshur lost their only regular-season meeting to the Indians dropping a 53-38 decision in Bridgeport back on Feb. 2.

The 38 points was a season-low for the Bucs.

In Section I, Morgantown was the top seed followed by Wheeling Park as the No. 2, Brooke as the No. 3 and John Marshall as the No. 4.

John Marshall (4-18) will visit Morgantown (20-1) and Brooke (9-13) will make a trip to Wheeling Park (14-7) in their sectional openers. Both games are scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The first-round winners in both sections will meet on Friday for their respective championships. The sectional champion and runner-up will both advance to regional play. Regional winners will advance to the WVSSAC High School Basketball State Tournament in Charleston.
