Baseball ‘Cats get swept at home by Bluefield State

BUCKHANNNON — Bluefield State University dominated the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats on Wednesday in a doubleheader as the Big Blues won both games 13-2 and 10-6.

Hitting was the name of the game for Bluefield State as it combined for a total of 35 hits in the two games. Three players that stood out in the doubleheader were Tahir Meulens, Chris Larkin, and Jean Carlos Diaz who accounted for 19 out of the 35 hits and tallied a total of 13 RBIs all together.

Bluefield State also got a stellar pitching performance from Zach Powell in the first game who threw six innings with only one earned run with three walks and four strikeouts.

After getting demolished in the first game, the Bobcats remained close with Bluefield in the second game up until the fifth inning. Wesleyan’s Thatcher Poteat led the charge, going 2-4 with three RBIs.

Anthony Napoleon recorded the loss.

Alex Kanipe won the second game for the Big Blues with five innings pitched. He gave up six runs, all earned, struck out six and walked a pair. Ilich Purcell took the loss.

Wesleyan travels to Salem University to take on the Tigers in a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 16 at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
