B-U’s Alyssa Abel earns All-State softball honors

TENNERTON – Buckhannon-Upshur’s Alyssa Abel was named to the 2023 West Virginia Sports Writers Association All-State Softball Team.

Abel, a sophomore, was selected to the Second Team as a catcher.

She led the Lady Bucs in offense with a .463 batting average getting 31 hits in 67 at bats with 13 extra base hits (eight doubles, two triples, three home runs). She scored a team-best 27 runs and was second on the team in runs-batted-in with 18.

“She worked really hard with her swing and it showed the last part of the season,” noted her head coach, Levi Bender. “She is a gifted athlete and I can’t wait to see that same dedication geared toward the little things of this sport guide her into becoming an even better player and person.”

Abel was recently selected as a Second Team outfielder by the Big 10 Conference.

Lincoln County junior catcher Josie Bird was named captain of the First Team while Spring Valley senior utility player Brooklyn Osburn was named captain of the Second Team.
