B-UHS Fine Arts Students of the Week: Thomas J. O’Neill and Janis Childers

Each week Buckhannon-Upshur High School features two Fine Arts Students of the Week to highlight the work students are doing in the art world.

Performing Arts Student of the Week: Thomas J. O’Neill

Thomas J. O’Neill is a senior student at Buckhannon-Upshur High School. He is a member of the Concert Choir, the Soundwaves, the Marching Band, Drumline, Concert Band, and Pro-Start. Outside of school, Thomas has helped out with shows at Buckhannon Community Theatre. He is currently auditioning for the WVMEA WVVMA All-State Chorus.

Over the years, some of Thomas’ favorite shows and events have included the 2022 Choir Christmas Concert, 2021 Marching Band Season, and 2022 Drumline Expo.

When asked why the arts are important to him, Thomas said, “They allow me to express myself and give me opportunities to interact with the community and my peers.”

After high school, Thomas plans to attend Fairmont State University to pursue a Business degree to eventually open his own bakery.

Visual Arts Student of the Week: Janis Childers

Janis Childers is a sophomore student at Buckhannon-Upshur High School. She is a member of the National Art Honor Society, where she enjoys giving back to her wonderful community through art. After school, Janis has helped with painting workshops. Janis has been awarded the Upshur Stars award for Social Studies/World History, and has had her art on display at the Upshur County Schools Youth Art Exhibit. She is currently building her portfolio to apply for Governor’s School for the Arts.

Janis is inspired by artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and enjoys creating pop art and comics. Some of her favorite projects over the years have included Inktober Mock Comic Covers and Pop-Art Lino Print.

When asked why the arts are important to her, Janis said, “The arts provide me the unique opportunity to express and share my joy and humor with my friends, teachers, and community.”

After high school, Janis plans to get her BFA and become a concept artist or a comic artist.
