B-UHS Athletic Hall of Fame banquet set for next Saturday

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur High School Athletic Hall of Fame Chairman, Jim Marsh has announced the 2023 class of inductees.

The athletes to be enshrined on September 30 at a special ceremony at the high school are Russ Bush, Andrew Carrier, Emily Godwin Summers, Myron B. Hymes, Sr., Rick Starkey and the 2010 Lady Bucs track and field team.

Russ Bush

Coach Bush served as a basketball and soccer coach at Buckhannon-Upshur High School for several years. He led the girls’ soccer teams to the state tournament in 1995, 1996 and 1997. His girls’ basketball teams advanced to the state tournament in 1996, 1997 and 1999.

Andrew Carrier

Andrew was a standout football and track star at B-UHS from 2004 through 2007. Among his many accomplishments were First Team All-State in football 2005 and 2006. He was a hurdler in track holding several NCAC and state track meet honors.

Emily Godwin Summers

Emily was named a Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2011 and 2012 and a First Team All-State soccer player in 2011 and 2012. She also was a member of the B-UHS Girls AAA state championship track team in 2010. Emily went on to earn All-ACC track honors at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Myron B. Hymes, Sr.

Myron excelled as a three-sport athlete at Buchannon High School graduating in 1916. He was a running back on the state championship football team in 1915. In track he was the state high jump champion in 1915. He went on to play football and basketball at West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1917 and 1918.

Rick Starkey

Rick was a three-sport athlete at B-UHS  from1966 through 1968 where he earned  eight varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball. He was the quarterback on the1966 AAA state championship football team. He earned All-State honors in football and baseball.

2010 Girls Track and Field Team

This group won the West Virginia AAA state championship in 2010.

They also were NCAC champions, regional champions and finished the season with an undefeated mark of 162-0. They were the first B-UHS girls’ team ever to earn a state championship.

All 2023 inductees will be introduced at half-time of the Buckhannon-Upshur University football game on September 29 and enshrined in the B-UHS Hall of Fame on September 30. This year 2023 marks the 20th year for honoring B-U Hall of Fame athletes, coaches and teams.

The public and all present Hall of Fame members are cordially invited to the induction banquet. All tickets are $15 each and must be purchased in advance as no tickets will be sold at the door.
