Upshur County native Monica Zalaznik is excited to be the newest member of the My Buckhannon team. She joined in January 2018 after graduating from Marshall University with a bachelor’s degree in print journalism and a minor in history.

But Monica’s interest in journalism isn’t limited to the written word. She enjoys delivering information in a variety of formats, including radio and podcasts.

Monica grew up in Buckhannon, where she attended Tennerton Elementary School and Buckhannon-Upshur middle and high schools. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, and some of her favorite authors include Brandon Sanderson, Kevin Hearne and Anthony Ryan. She also loves playing video games – especially “The Legend of Zelda” – and all the Harry Potter books.

Upshur County Commission primary comes down to 13 votes

The Upshur County Commission Republican primary came down to just 13 votes on election day. Patrick Lane thanked supporters, his family and his opponents after the close race, while county officials reported a smooth election day overall.

Man arrested after officers respond to overdose in Buckhannon

A Buckhannon man was arrested on multiple drug-related charges after police responded to a wreck on North Spring Street and allegedly found fentanyl in the vehicle. Additional charges stem from a December 2025 overdose where drugs were found nearby.

Rotary grant helps Ride and Shine buy bikes for Upshur County kids

Ride and Shine Bikes for Upshur Kids purchased two bicycles with help from a $1,000 grant from the Rotary Club of Buckhannon-Upshur. Founder Julia Kastner says the new nonprofit is on pace to provide up to 30 bikes to local children this year.
