Attention Upshur, Barbour, Jackson and Mason County hunters: Important info from the DNR

With the 2022 deer firearm season quickly approaching, the West Virginia DNR would like to remind hunters of the mandatory Biological Examination Stations in Barbour, Jackson, Mason, and Upshur counties. All deer harvested by hunters on November 21 and 22, 2022 in Barbour, Jackson, Mason, and Upshur counties are required to be brought to a designated Biological Examination Station for carcass examination by DNR personnel.

All data collected from the deer will help assist the DNR biologists to better manage the deer herd population for future generations. According to Steve Rauch, Assistant Chief of Game Management, “This action is necessary to increase WVDNR’s ability to gather deer physical characteristics and age at harvest to manage deer populations and make efficient use of WVDNR personnel at these examination stations during peak hunter harvest”.

Hunters are reminded that they are still required to check their deer via telephone, internet or at a license agent. The hunters in Barbour, Jackson, Mason, and Upshur counties must bring the deer to one of the eighteen (18) locations listed below for examination. WVDNR personnel will be at these locations on November 21 and 22, 2022 between the hours of 9AM and 8PM to examine and age deer.

Hunter cooperation is essential to the success of deer management and all hunters are encouraged to have a safe and successful deer firearm season.
