Alderson Broaddus University Hosts International Holocaust Remembrance Day Event

PHILIPPI, W.Va.- Alderson Broaddus University Battlers joined with people around the world to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust as part of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The campus community observed International Holocaust Remembrance Day with a special presentation by volunteer students, faculty, and staff members on Monday, Jan. 27, in the Hamer Campus Center on the Alderson Broaddus campus.

Alongside a poster presentation, volunteers participated in the “Victims’ Names Reading” session and read 5,000 names of those who died during the Holocaust. Names were read continuously throughout the morning and afternoon. The reading and presentation were designed to increase awareness of tolerance issues and to honor the millions murdered during the Holocaust.

“It is a commitment by the university to recognize and commemorate the Holocaust and to learn from the tragedy,” said David Falletta, assistant dean of students. “The goal is to bring together the academic community and remind everyone of the history of the Holocaust. The participation of our students, faculty, and staff members was remarkable.”

The United Nations General Assembly created International Holocaust Remembrance Day in November 2005, and the selected date commemorated the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27, 1945. The day is recognized across the world to remember the six million Jews that were murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of other people killed from 1933-1945 under the Nazi persecution and in genocides across the world since.
