Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia surge by nearly 20 percent over the weekend

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 1,567 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 243 since the last report and the highest level in more than a month.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (28), Barbour (10), Lewis (29), Randolph (20) and Webster (30) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of seven active cases since Friday.

No additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of July 26, 2021, there have been 3,101,280 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 166,108 total cases and 2,936 deaths,” according to a press release.

The daily percent positive was 5.12%.

A total of 875,317 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 49% of the state.
