Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia increase by more than 1,000 for second straight day

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 13,766 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 1,030 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (267), Barbour (227), Lewis (111), Randolph (258) and Webster (55) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 27 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Five additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 69-year old male from Roane County, a 54-year old male from Berkeley County, a 36-year old female from Morgan County, an 86-year old female from Fayette County, and an 83-year old male from Kanawha County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of August 27, 2021, there have been 3,345,070 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 184,682 total cases and 3,054 deaths,” according to a press release.

The daily percent positive was 10.94%.

A total of 907,182 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 51% of the state.
