Active COVID-19 cases decline statewide and locally on Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 8,002 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 426 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (70), Barbour (55), Lewis (69), Randolph (77) and Webster (45) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of five active cases in the last 24 hours.

Seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 72-year old female from Mercer County, an 82-year old female from Wood County, a 63-year old male from Fayette County, a 94-year old female from Mineral County, a 57-year old female from Harrison County, a 79-year old female from Logan County and a 78-year old female from Greenbrier County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of December 14, 2021, there are currently 8,002 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been seven deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,114 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 633 residents are hospitalized with the virus (82% unvaccinated, 18% vaccinated), with 201 currently in intensive care (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated) and 123 on a ventilator (85% unvaccinated, 15% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 10.29%.

A total of 908,046 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 51% of the state.
