Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia top 2,000 mark on Friday, more than doubling in two weeks

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 2,057 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 147 since the last report and more than double the low point reached earlier this month.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (28), Barbour (18), Lewis (36), Randolph (18) and Webster (50) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of two active cases in the last 24 hours.

Two additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 64-year old male from Brooke County and a 42-year old male from Mason County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of July 30, 2021, there have been 3,120,149 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 167,016 total cases and 2,946 deaths,” according to a press release.

The daily percent positive was 6.2%.

A total of 877,407 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 49% of the state.
