West Virginia reports six additional COVID-19 deaths, decrease in active cases on Wednesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 5,173 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 168 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (39), Barbour (21), Lewis (30), Randolph (214) and Webster (19) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of seven active cases in the last 24 hours.

Six additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 84-year old female from Fayette County, a 75-year old male from Logan County, a 62-year old male from Mercer County, a 92-year old female from Monongalia County, an 80-year old male from Mercer County, and a 74-year old female from Calhoun County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 26, 2021, there have been 2,896,091 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 160,777 total cases and 2,788 deaths,” according to a press release.

The daily percent positive was 3.24%.

A total of 724,152 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 40% of the state.
