Each week, Upshur County families travel to the local public schools to receive food boxes for their children. Volunteers and dedicated employees readily wait at all locations to serve the children of our community. Boxes are packaged with meals for five-days while students are participating in remote learning instruction.

During the month of December, Upshur County School cooks prepared and served 12,361 hot meals. Additionally, 10,600 five-day food boxes, containing breakfast and lunch, were served to children.

“We have a system in place that is providing essentials to our families. We will strive to continue doing whatever we can to help,” says Wellness and Child Nutrition Director, Mr. Eddie Vincent.

As families come to pick-up boxes, they express their gratitude and appreciation.

“We come every week to pick up boxes for three different families. It means a lot to all of us,” shares one individual.

“We are happy to help the families in our community and we enjoy seeing the kids when they come through to pick-up the food we have prepared,” exclaimed Buckhannon Academy Elementary School cooks.

As students transition to in-person instruction, food boxes will continue to be offered. Food boxes are available for Upshur County children ages 18 and younger. Food distribution times and locations will be posted weekly on the Upshur County Schools website and social media pages.

“The Upshur County School District remains committed to the health, safety, and well-being of staff and students. We are grateful for our community and your continued support and look forward to seeing our students,” says Dr. Sara Stankus.
