Strawberry royalty crowned as festival season takes the throne

Gavin Moody shot a 40 to tie for second, while Alex Fisher carded a 42 for fifth at Clarksburg Country Club. Buckhannon-Upshur tied Robert C. Byrd for third with a team score of 177.

Buckhannon-Upshur debuted at No. 13 in the WVSSAC Class AAAA playoff ratings after a 24-19 win over Nicholas County. The Buccaneers host Elkins on Friday, with the top 16 teams qualifying for the postseason.

Buckhannon-Upshur topped Preston 2-1 and swept North Marion 2-0 in a road tri-match Thursday. The two victories lifted the Lady Bucs to 7-7 on the season.

Emma Pingley and Eli Watkins are this week’s Hank Ellis All-Stars. Pingley placed 17th at the state golf invitational, while Watkins scored twice — including the late game-winner — in B-U football’s first victory of the season.

West Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper Reyna Dalton earned MEC Women’s Defensive Player of the Week honors after making 19 saves and posting consecutive shutouts against Concord and Glenville State.
