West Virginia reports record number of new COVID-19 cases on Friday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that a record 524 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State. That marks the first time the state has reported more than 500 new daily cases.

Upshur County, meanwhile, reported three new cases Friday and turned orange on the daily alert map, meaning schools and sports will likely be canceled again all of next week. That won’t be official until the West Virginia Department of Education releases the official map at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Upshur County students have not been in school for four straight weeks and were not scheduled to return until Nov. 5 at the earliest due to the current outbreak in the transportation department.

Eight additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 93-year old female from Cabell County, a 90-year old male from Wetzel County, an 84-year old male from Kanawha County, a 55-year old male from Cabell County, an 82-year old female from Monongalia County, an 83-year old male from Monongalia County, a 73-year old male from Fayette County, and an 89-year old female from Fayette County.

In Upshur County, Friday’s report:

  • Removed a probable case and added a confirmed case to Oct. 26
  • Removed four probable cases and added four confirmed cases to Oct. 28
  • Added two probable cases and one confirmed case to Oct. 29

Free testing is available Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10 a.m., October 30, 2020, there have been 767,500 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 23,990 total cases and 451 deaths,” according to a press release.

New cases were reported Friday in Barbour, Berkeley, Boone, Braxton, Brooke, Cabell, Fayette, Grant, Greenbrier, Hampshire, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lewis, Lincoln, Logan, Marion, Marshall, Mason, Mercer, Mineral, Mingo, Monongalia, Monroe, Morgan, Nicholas, Ohio, Pleasants, Pocahontas, Preston, Putnam, Raleigh, Ritchie, Roane, Summers, Taylor, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, Wayne, Webster, Wetzel, Wirt, Wood and Wyoming counties.

About 4,987 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 18,552 people have recovered and 451 have died. The daily percent positive was 3.77%.
