BUCKHANNON — A woman in her 50s was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital and later transferred to a Pittsburgh hospital with multiple burns after a fire broke out at a residence on Fayette Street Wednesday morning.
Vice president for marketing and public relations with St. Joseph’s Hospital/WVU Medicine Lisa Wharton said the woman had been transferred to the University of Pittsburgh Mercy Trauma and Burn Center.
The fire department declined to release the name or condition of the woman.
The initial call came in just before 11 a.m., and firefighters quickly arrived on scene at 87 Fayette St., with reports that a woman was trapped on the second floor. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance less than 15 minutes later.
HealthNet could not fly due to weather.
Several local fire departments — including Adrian Volunteer Fire Department and Washington District Volunteer Fire Company — responded to the scene, along with Upshur County EMS and the Buckhannon Police Department.
Buckhannon Fire Department career firefighter Ethan Smith said firefighters were dispatched out at 10:50 a.m. and had the fire under control within a few minutes of their arrival.
“The fire was contained to the second floor,” Smith said. “After it was contained, we were ventilating and searching to make sure the fire didn’t reach the third floor.”
The fire was contained to the second floor of the three-story residence.
Firefighters were on scene just over an hour.
