Rate of new COVID-19 cases continues to surge in West Virginia on Independence Day

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Saturday that 79 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

The percentage of positive tests, number of active cases and amount of patients hospitalized are all also on the rise, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

One additional death has been attributed to the disease – an 89-year old female from Greenbrier County.

“On this Independence Day, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of another West Virginian,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary, in a press release.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 5 p.m., on July 4, 2020, there have been 183,401 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 3,205 total cases and 94 deaths,” according to the release.

New cases were reported Saturday in Berkeley, Brooke, Cabell, Greenbrier, Harrison, Jefferson, Kanawha, Marion, Mason, Mercer, Mingo, Monongalia, Monroe, Nicholas, Ohio, Pocahontas, Preston, Putnam, Randolph, Taylor and Wood counties.

About 693 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 2,418 people have recovered and 94 have died.
