The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 37 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.
No additional deaths were announced.
“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 5 p.m., on May 29, 2020, there have been 93,872 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 1,972 total cases and 74 deaths,” according to a press release.
New cases were reported Friday in Berkeley, Brooke, Grant, Hampshire, Hancock, Hardy, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lewis, Monongalia, Pendleton, Pocahontas, Preston and Randolph counties.
Locally, Lewis County saw two new cases and Randolph had five. The DHHR also removed the case reported Thursday in Webster County and reassigned it to Randolph County.
Earlier in the day, governor Jim Justice announced that sporting events could resume, with spectators, in June.
Sports, from the youth through adult levels, can begin practicing on June 8, Justice said. Games can begin for adult leagues immediately, while youth games can begin June 22. Spectators will be permitted.
The order came two days after World TeamTennis announced they would be holding the 2020 season at The Greenbrier – the White Sulfur Springs resort owned by Justice. After a nationwide search, the Greenbrier was the only venue that agreed to allow spectators, the league said.
Justice also noted that after several days of increases, the number of active cases and positive rate have started to tick down slightly, although they remain above the lows established earlier in May. There are currently 624 active cases, according to DHHR data; the monthly high is 648 (May 27) and the low is 476 (May 5).
With the West Virginia economy now open, Justice said state finances are “rock solid” and revenues are coming in above estimates. He said the state will have enough cash to make it to the end of the fiscal year in June and will not have to call a special session.
“We’re in good shape,” Justice said.
