ELKINS – Alyssa La’Rein Bailey of Pineville has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship to Davis & Elkins College after participating in Senator Leadership & Scholarship Day in a virtual platform. Bailey, a student at Westside High School, was selected from a group of the 37 highest achieving high school seniors accepted to attend D&E this fall.
Bailey is the daughter of Deanna M. Bailey and Gerald Z. Bailey of Pineville. At Westside High School, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Math Elites, GEAR UP and GEAR UP HEROs. She was selected to attend the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment and is a member of The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. As a student-athlete, Bailey participates in softball, volleyball and cross country. She is also involved in various student organizations including Hi-Y, pep club, yearbook staff, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, RAZE and SADD.
At Davis & Elkins, Bailey plans to major in biology and pre-veterinary.
To be eligible to compete for a Leadership Scholarship, students must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Students were also required to submit a list of outstanding leadership honors or awards they have received and describe three skills that have strengthened them as a leader. Students vying for the scholarships participated in interviews and submitted an essay of no more than 500 words consisting of a personal statement outlining their interests, life experiences, goals and commitment to leadership.
