BUCKHANNON – A Buckhannon man was arrested over the weekend after allegedly assaulting his grandmother.
Owen Coffey Jr., 19, was arrested for malicious assault, a felony, on Saturday, April 25, following an incident that allegedly occurred on Franklin Street.
According to the criminal complaint in the Upshur County Magistrate Clerk’s Office filed by investigating officer Patrolman Colin G. Cope with the Buckhannon Police Department, just after 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Cope and Sgt. Tom Posey, also with the BPD, responded to Franklin Street in reference to an active domestic.
The file says that upon arriving on scene, Cope observed Coffey sitting in the back seat of a car with blood on his hands. The victim, his grandmother, was on the porch bleeding profusely from the side of her head. The complaint says “multiple individuals” told officers Coffey allegedly put his hands in his grandmother’s mouth, tearing away the side of her cheek, according to the report.
Magistrate Kay Hurst said bail at $100,000 cash only.
The penalty for a conviction of malicious assault is imprisonment in the state penitentiary for two to 10 years.
