BUCKHANNON — Here’s a reminder to remember the fallen: The Upshur County Honor Guard’s annual Memorial Day ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 26 at Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon.
The cemetery is located north of the city, just off the Hall Road and is home to Larry Brown Flagpole Hill and the Flags of the Fallen Memorial.
Memorial Day — which is always celebrated on the last Monday in May — is a U.S. public holiday designated as a time to pay tribute to the sacrifices of those who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The U.S. Armed Forces is comprised of the country’s five military branches: the Army, the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Air Force and the Coast Guard.
It is often confused with Veterans Day, a holiday celebrated annually Nov. 11 — and which honors all veterans who have served in the military.
In addition, a third, but lesser known holiday is Armed Forces Day, which takes place on the third Saturday in May — this year on May 18, 2019 — and was established in the wake of the consolidation of the five branches of the U.S. military through the U.S. Department of Defense.
Locally, Memorial Day fireworks over Stonewall Jackson Lake are slated for approximately 9 p.m. at Stonewall Resort in Lewis County Sunday, May 26. The entrance fee to the park is $10 per car for the Lakeside Fireworks Display.
