BUCKHANNON – You glow, girls (and boys)!
That’s right: the James W. Curry Public Library is kicking off the summer season with a glow stick party.
Director and head librarian for the James W. Curry Library Judith Williams said the party will happen at the large pavilion in James W. Curry Park from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday, June 6.
“They can dance if they want, run around play on the playground, we will be selling concessions and have some pizza, and I think sodas and water and maybe some baked goods that we will be selling,” Williams said. “It will start at 8, and as it starts to gets a little darker, about nine or so, we will start getting the glow sticks out.”
She said they will be selling the glow sticks for about 25 cents to $2 in order to raise money for their children’s programs, such as their Christmas events.
“Every Tuesday that we’re not doing summer reading, we have a family story time program, then we also participate in the community trick-or-treat, and we have also a huge Christmas program for the children,” Williams said. “We don’t have a lot of money available out here so we do a lot of crafts they can give as Christmas gifts, and we have refreshments.”
“They do a whole bunch of crafts and they get to visit with Santa Claus and we make sure every child leaves with the book,” Williams added.
She said the money raised may also go toward the library’s efforts to purchase new laptops and tablets.
“We don’t have the infrastructure to support that yet, so we’re trying to get grants and use our money towards getting stuff like that, which can help bring our kids in southern Upshur County up to speed,” Williams said.
She said the idea came from people on the fundraising committee after they had seen it elsewhere.
“We have a number of the people who are volunteer firefighters on our fundraising committee now, and they said, ‘well we’ve done this in the past and it’s worked and people enjoyed it,’ so we thought we would try it and maybe start a new tradition.”
Williams said anyone who attends is encouraged to wear white shirts so the glow sticks stand out even more.
