ELKINS – An exhibit of hand-carved African artifacts will officially open in The Joni and Buck Smith Arts Forum on the Davis & Elkins College campus with a public reception Friday, Febr. 8. Guests are invited to view the works, and enjoy refreshments and African drumming music from 3-5 p.m.
Sponsored by The Stirrup Gallery and the Davis & Elkins College Division of Creative Arts, the free exhibit will remain open through the end of February in celebration of Black History Month. The items are on loan from the personal collection of D&E Adjunct Professor in Dance Laurie Goux.
Goux was given the artifacts by her godfather who was a master blacksmith and well versed in African art and culture. Among artifacts are Massi shields and West African drums. Goux has used many of the items to teach cultural curriculum in Randolph, Harrison and Barbour County schools. She hopes the exhibit will expand on the teachings of black history and spark interest in African cosmology.
