Buckhannon-Upshur High School students helped hang a drug prevention banner on campus as part of Red Ribbon Week.
Upshur County Schools said in an October 28 release that the week’s discussions and activities at every school in the district focus on substance abuse risks and healthy choices.
Red Ribbon Week is a national drug prevention campaign, and the district said its message carries particular weight in Appalachia, where many communities have seen the effects of substance abuse firsthand.
“When these students hung this banner, they were doing more than promoting an awareness campaign. They were helping send a message that the next generation can break cycles that have affected families and communities for far too long,” Matthew Sisk, Upshur County Schools director of safety, technology and facilities, said in the release.
