Morgantown, W.Va. — The West Virginia University School of Medicine Division of Physical Therapy and West Virginia University Department of Athletics are partnering to provide clinical services to student-athletes and enhance the learning experience for physical therapy doctoral students.
Under a memorandum of understanding, physical therapy doctoral students interested in sports physical therapy can complete clinical education, including assisting with examinations of student-athletes’ athletic injuries, post-operative rehabilitation and return-to-play testing.
“What began three years ago as a shared vision between the Division of Physical Therapy and the Department of Athletics to establish a Division I Sports Physical Therapy Fellowship has grown,” said Ivan Mulligan, PT, board certified clinical specialist in Sports Physical Therapy and chair of the Division of Physical Therapy. “This agreement demonstrates a true partnership in caring for our athletes. Sports medicine is collaborative, with team physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, strength and conditioning staff, and others working side by side.”
According to the partnership, Mulligan and Justin Payette, DPT, who are both sports physical therapy board-certified clinical specialists with Division I experience, will provide clinical service to student-athletes.
Mulligan, Payette and Olivia Roe, a sports physical therapy fellow, will oversee the clinical education experiences of physical therapy doctoral students assigned to Athletics.
“Having physical therapists who are sports clinical specialists on that team allows us to provide cutting-edge care today while training the next generation of sports physical therapists,” Mulligan said. “Together, we’re building a model for effective athlete care, and we’re just getting started.”
In turn, team physicians and athletic training staff in Athletics will coordinate services provided by WVUPT. The department also will serve as a site for clinical education experiences by hosting assigned physical therapy doctoral students.
“WVU Athletics is thrilled to partner with the WVU School of Medicine’s Division of Physical Therapy,” said Matt Wells, WVU deputy director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Services and Performance. “The addition of Ivan Mulligan, Justin Payette, and Olivia Roe to our talented sports medicine team, through this partnership, allows us to continue to provide the best care possible to our student-athletes.”
