West Virginia’s 2026 School Clothing Allowance application period has closed after just one week, with the state Department of Human Services saying program funding has been exhausted.
Applications stopped being accepted at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, July 27, according to a notice posted on the Bureau for Family Assistance website. The program had opened Monday, July 20, after the state lifted a pause on it amid uncertainty over West Virginia’s federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funding.
DoHS said in its July 10 announcement that applications would be accepted until August 15 or until funding was fully allocated, whichever came first.
Applications submitted by 11:59 p.m. July 27 will be approved if eligibility requirements are met, the department said. Applications received after that time will be denied.
The program provides a $200 benefit per eligible child toward clothing appropriate for school, such as pants, shirts, skirts, dresses, shoes, coats and underwear. Piece goods may be purchased to make clothing. Purchases are exempt from sales tax and some stores offer discounts to customers using the benefit.
“DoHS appreciates the strong response to this year’s School Clothing Allowance program,” the department said in its notice.
