Tygarts Valley Conservation District will host “Hay: Techniques, Testing and Discussion,” presented by Gene Hovatter of Higher Knowledge Farms, LLC, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, at the Tygarts Valley Conservation District Office, 16346 Barbour County Highway, Philippi, WV 26416.

The session will cover clear, simple steps that can make hay work easier and more efficient. It will be useful for beginners as well as for people who’ve been doing it for years.

Topics include basic bale size, shape and moisture content. The class will look at how to time cutting, how different tools work and why fast drying matters. Attendees will also hear about raking tips, baler speed, bale quality and storage options.

There will be guidance on when it makes sense to make your own hay or when to buy it. Feeding needs for cattle at different stages will be explained along with easy math to plan daily feed and winter totals. Simple ways to cut hay waste will also be covered.

Hay testing will be discussed, including how to get a good sample and why a small test can prevent big problems. Attendees will learn what to look for in hay, such as smell, color, leafiness and species. Real buying examples and common selling phrases will help attendees know what to watch for.

Attending educational events like this one also provides bonus points in ranking Agricultural Enhancement Program applications. Signups for TVCD AgEP are open May 4 through May 29, so this class is a chance to learn and improve an application at the same time.

There will be time for questions and open discussion, and refreshments will be available.

Please RSVP by calling Tygarts Valley Conservation District at (304) 457-3026 or go to the event listing on TVCD’s Facebook page and click “going.” The session is free and open to everyone.

“The problem with round bales is that it’s hard for a cow to get a square meal.”
