Upshur County Public Library launches ‘Food for Fines’ drive benefiting Free Meals Appalachia

The Upshur County Public Library is accepting nonperishable food donations in exchange for credits on overdue fines as part of its “Food for Fines” community drive.

Each donated nonperishable item applies a $1 credit toward library late fees. The offer does not apply to billed items, and community members may donate even if they do not owe fines.

Collected items will be delivered to Free Meals Appalachia (FMA), organized by Abigail Wiernik. FMA assembles family meal bags using pantry staples to help address gaps in SNAP benefits and is part of the Appalachian Mutual Aid Collective.

Donations can be dropped off at the Upshur County Public Library, 1150 Route 20 South Rd, Buckhannon, WV 26201. For more information, call 304-473-4219 or click here for a donation list.
