A group of Upshur County residents gathered this month to encourage others to get moving to stay healthy by hiking a ‘Mountaineer Mile’ at the Upshur County Trails.

Upshur County Commissioner Kristie Tenney, WBOY’s Lauren Winans and Rachel Weber with the volunteer Upshur County Trails group led about 20 people on a one-mile walk during the lunch hour on June 18.

In a bid to get West Virginians on their feet and moving towards a healthier future, Governor Patrick Morrisey launched the “Mountaineer Mile” this year, a new statewide initiative encouraging residents to walk at least one mile each day.

The program aims to improve the overall health and well-being of the state’s population.

The initiative encourages participants to share their progress and experiences on social media using the hashtag #MountaineerMile, creating a virtual community of support and motivation.

A simple daily walk can lead to a wealth of health benefits, from improving your cardiovascular system to boosting your mental well-being.
