Vandalia Health System expands teleneurology to Broaddus Hospital with promising results for stroke care

Vandalia Health System has successfully expanded teleneurology services to Broaddus Hospital, enhancing stroke care in Barbour and surrounding counties.

With the program’s implementation, patients at Broaddus Hospital now have access to Vandalia Health teleneurology specialists through a secure telehealth connection at the hospital to quickly assess and recommend treatment for stroke.

“Our Emergency Department and Radiology teams have embraced our teleneurology program. Their dedication has brought efficient and effective stroke care to the bedside, ensuring our patients receive the best possible outcomes,” said Dave Strait, RN, Emergency Department Clinical Coordinator and Community Liaison at Broaddus Hospital.

In the initial weeks since the program’s implementation, the Broaddus Hospital team treated four stroke cases. All patients received timely intervention and were transported for advanced care as needed.

“The early results from our teleneurology program have been outstanding, with our team exceeding national benchmarks across the board—streamlining critical steps like getting patients to imaging in just under 5 minutes and administering treatment in an average of 45 minutes,” Strait said. “These achievements highlight our commitment to delivering rapid, lifesaving stroke care close to home.”

Prompt diagnosis and intervention are critical to reversing debility and preventing further loss of functioning in acute stroke cases. Additionally, the service supports inpatients with neurologic conditions, ensuring comprehensive care throughout the hospital.

“When it comes to stroke treatment, we know that every second matters. The addition of teleneurology services for stroke patients here at Broaddus Hospital represents a significant leap forward for health care in our region by delivering advanced, timely care from Vandalia Health experts where and when it is needed most,” said Dana Gould, Chief Administrative Officer for Broaddus Hospital. “We are committed to continuously enhancing our services, refining our processes and collaborating with local EMS to ensure timely transport and care for all our stroke patients.”
