Self-care presentation for first responders Tuesday

Update: This event has been canceled and will be rescheduled at a later date.

Mike Kuba will present “Hearing the Call for Self-Care: Supporting first responders and other care-givers” at the Public Safety Complex on Tuesday, Nov. 27, from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. The program is for law enforcement officers, firefighters, ministers and medical and mental health professionals.

Kuba has 40 years of experience as a professional counselor, trainer, teacher and administrator.

Emergency responders are trained to move into action when the call comes to help others. Clearly, individuals in these roles face intense and difficult circumstances that take a personal toll. Many professional organizations and associations recognize the need for training in self-care strategies and access to support. One dilemma is that sometimes, and for a variety of reasons, hearing the call for self-care is minimized or goes unheard.

This program is designed to support emergency responders by providing:

a) A framework for understanding how self-care practices are as crucial for emergency responders as training in preparation to respond to the needs of others.

b) Three approaches for attuning to and managing the personal (and natural) consequences of crisis intervention work.

c) Guidance in developing personal practices that can promote healthy self-care and enhance personal resilience.
