Soccer Lady Bucs fall to Elkins in final minutes of contest, 2-1

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Lady Bucs were oh so close to holding on to a tie with the Elkins Tigers Thursday night in a home Big 10 Conference game.

The Lady Bucs and Tigers were tied at 1-1 with under two minutes to play but the Lady Bucs gave up an unassisted goal from 25 yards out to Addy Cogar as Elkins left Buckhannon with a 2-1 win.

“We played phenomenal throughout the entire game by creating great chances and possessing the ball for the majority of the game,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Piacente. “It is definitely a tough loss, but I am so proud of how well the girls played all around.”

Cogar gave Elkins an early 1-0 lead in the third minute when Darby Bailey played a cross into the box and she finished with a shot to the back of the net.

The game remained 1-0 at the half.

Haley Triplett passed a ball in from the top of the box to Hannah Boyles who beat Elkins keeper Erin Collins with a shot to tie the game at 1-1 in the 52nd minute.

Neither team was able to find the net again until Cogar had her game-winning shot in the 78th minute.

The Lady Bucs were outshot by a 9-8 margin but led in corner kicks by a 10-3 margin.

Buckhannon-Upshur was guilty of six fouls while Elkins was called for four.

B-U keeper Harley Dean turned away seven shots while Collins made seven saves for the Tigers.

Elkins improved to 12-3-1 on the year and 9-2 in the Big 10 Conference.

The loss dropped the Lady Bucs to 8-6 overall and 7-3 in the league play.

The Lady Bucs will be back in action Tuesday at Grafton for an 8 p.m. start.
