Lady Bobcats blank Glenville State in a 2-0 soccer win

BUCKHANNON — West Virginia Wesleyan’s women’s soccer program got back on the winning track with a 2-0 shut out over cross-county rival Glenville State University, Wednesday at Culpepper Stadium in Buckhannon.

The Lady Bobcats’ first goal at 11:24 came after the Pioneers’ Valentina Quiroz blasted a shot from 20 yards out that dinged off the left post and dropped into an immediate counter-offensive. It took two 40-yard passes, the last one coming from the mid-stripe by forward Mia Rodriguez to a sprinting defender Tessa Grisez in the middle of the field, who lobbed the winner from just outside the penalty area over Glenville’s keeper Anjolie Colon.

Forward Hannah Dietrich put Wesleyan up by two in the 54th minute on a solo incursion into the box on the left wing that forced Colon out of her net. The two met 15 yards from goal and Dietrich came away on the better end of the collision, found an open net and sizzled a shot along the ground past the near post.

Wesleyan took six shots to Glenville’s 11. Corners were even at one each. Fouls were plentiful: Wesleyan had 15 and Glenville, 10.

The Lady Bobcats’ Paula Garcia recorded the clean sheet with three saves. Colon had two.

Sunday night, Sept. 29, the Bobcat women start an evening doubleheader against Davis and Elkins College. The women play at 6 p.m. and the men start at 8 p.m.
