Soccer ‘Cats battle Charleston but come up just short in 3-2 loss

CHARLESTON — The University of Charleston outlasted a West Virginia Wesleyan second half comeback to top the Bobcats 3-2 in Charleston, Sunday.

Looking at the stats, you might have guessed that Charleston blew out the Bobcats and, realistically, the game looked headed in that direction when the Golden Eagles’ leading scorer Joao Belmudes (assist by Caio Moraes) put his team up 2-0 just 12 minutes into the second half. Charleston outshot Wesleyan 16-3 and took 10 corners which was 10 more than the Bobcats recorded.

But a combination of stellar goal-keeping by the ‘Cats James Docherty, who stopped eight of Charleston’s 11 on-goal attempts, and an efficiency in the offensive third that buried its only two on-goal tries, tied the score in the game’s 76th minute.

Just a minute after the Eagles went up by two, junior forward Casey Bunker buried his first goal of the year, and junior forward Chiedozie Ozo-Undeze scored his first goal to tie the game.

Charleston scored the game-winner in the 78th minute on a set play from Michail Tselios to Tristen Rose.

The Bobcats look for a bit of revenge against the Concord University Mountain Lions at home Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. Concord knocked the Bobcats out of the Mountain East Conference playoffs in 2023.
