The Literacy Volunteers of Upshur County is extending its heartfelt thanks to the local organizations, businesses and individuals who made it possible for the nonprofit to continue offering free adult tutoring services over the past year.
“We wouldn’t be here without the support of our grantors and community partners,” said Jennifer Higham, director of LVUC. “This funding has allowed us to keep our doors open and provide essential services to adult learners in Upshur County.”
LVUC offers free and confidential one-on-one tutoring for adults ages 16 and older who are not enrolled in school but need help improving their reading, basic math or computer skills.
Higham said grants from organizations like ProLiteracy’s Opportunity Fund, the United Way of Gilmer, Lewis and Upshur Counties, and The Whatcom Foundation helped cover utilities, internet services, student and office supplies and other operational costs.
“Grants like these, along with generous donations from local businesses, organizations and individuals, truly made all the difference in our ability to continue serving students this year,” Higham said.
The program’s impact goes beyond the classroom, she added.
“When our students meet their literacy goals, it improves their lives and it strengthens our entire community,” Higham said.
As the organization prepares for another year of service, LVUC is hopeful that this support will continue.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the help we’ve received and hope to sustain that momentum,” Higham said. “The future is brighter for our students when the community stands behind them.”
