Soccer ‘Cats come up short in debut against Frostburg State in 2-0 loss

BUCKHANNON — West Virginia Wesleyan men’s soccer was shut out Sunday by Frostburg State University 2-0 in its home opener for the 2024 season.

Frostburg’s first goal was scored early by Randy Ferrin (assist to Mateo Cuadros) in the 13th minute. The second goal was scored by Carlos Quintero Riva at 52:53 on the clock.

The match was filled with fouls and penalty cards. Each side committed 10 fouls and Frostburg was tagged with five yellow cards to Wesleyan’s three.

Without a score, Wesleyan still out shot Frostburg 13 to 10 with six shots on goal. Wesleyan also had more corner kick chances with six to Frostburg’s five.

Senior goalkeeper Bryant Sheffield served 90 minutes in the net and recorded a single save for Wesleyan. Jan Foret saved six for Frostburg.

The Bobcats head to Wheeling University on Wednesday, Sept. 11 for a 7 p.m. start.
