Hilda Dale Long

Hilda Dale Long, age 95, of Buckhannon and formerly of Pickens, died Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at the Davis Medical Center in Elkins. 

She was born on January 15, 1928, in Selbyville, a daughter of the late Sheridan and Connie Beulah Crites Lewis. On January 17, 1948, she was united in marriage to Cecil Sterling Long, who preceded her in death on February 19, 1997. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by two brothers: Dolan and Denver Lewis and one son-in-law Jerry Richard Lewis. She is survived by two daughters: Patty and husband Tony Rolenson and Brenda Lewis, both of Buckhannon; five grandchildren:  Joe, Rodney, and Tommy Rolenson, Leslie Cutright, and Sarah Elliott; eight great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. 

Mrs. Long retired from Randolph County Schools where she had worked as a cook at the Pickens School for many years, becoming famous for her cinnamon rolls. She deeply loved the community of Pickens and enjoyed assisting with ramp dinners and the Maple Syrup Festival. She was a member of the Pickens American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Beech Mountain Sportsmen’s Club Ladies Auxiliary, and the Pickens Rebekah Lodge No. 55. She was a talented quilter and gardener (especially roses) and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

A special thanks is extended by the family to the staff of Mountain Memories in Elkins and the Davis Medical Center ICU nurses for the care given to their mother and grandmother.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, from 4-7:00 PM, at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel. The funeral will be held at the funeral chapel on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Randy Long and Rev. Bob Yothers officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Dale Cemetery.
