Basketball Lady ‘Cats lose close one on the road to Frostburg State, 54-49

FROSTBURG, Md. – The West Virginia Wesleyan (0-1, 0-1) women’s basketball team dropped a 54-49 road conference game at Frostburg State (2-2, 1-0) on Saturday (Nov. 19) afternoon at Bobcat Arena in Frostburg, Md.

WVWC Leaders
Emma Witt had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Daveona Hatchell also turned in a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Courtney Wilfong passed two assists and came up with two steals.

Inside the First Half
Frostburg State scored the first three points of the game and led 3-0. After four points from Witt and two points from Alani Murray and Daveona Hatchell, WVWC led 8-3 with 3:01 left to play in the first quarter. M’laya Ainsworth drilled a shot from beyond the arc with 22 seconds left in the first quarter and WVWC led 13-6. Rhiana Hall would make one of two free throws for FSU, and they would trail 13-7 at the end of the first frame.

Frostburg State came out firing to begin the second quarter outscoring WVWC 9-3 to tie the score 16-16. After a Hatchell layup, FSU would regain the lead on a three-pointer from Emilee Weakley 19-18. Wesleyan battled back to regain the lead off a layup from Witt and led 24-22. FSU scored the final four points of the second quarter and took a 26-24 lead into halftime.

Inside the Second Half
Hatchell scored the first point of the second half and WVWC tied the score 26-26. Frostburg State made back-to-back shots from beyond the arc and led 32-26. FSU doubled up Wesleyan after going on an 8-4 scoring run and led 40-30. WVWC scored the final three points of the third quarter and trailed 40-33 going into the fourth quarter.

Frostburg State scored the first six points to begin the fourth quarter and led 45-34. Following two made three-pointers from Akalah Jackson, a layup, and a pair of free throws from Witt, WVWC trailed 45-43 with 3:38 left to play in the game. Wesleyan cut the deficit to one after a pair of free throws from Witt 46-45. Rhiana Hall would grab her 15th point of the night on a layup and FSU led 48-45. Witt responded on the other end with her 19th point of the day and Wesleyan trailed 48-47. Following a free throw from Arianna Briggs, Ainsworth made her presence known in the paint driving to tie the game 49-49. Frostburg State scored the final five points of the game and won, 54-49.
